In a wavelet transform image compression system, the rate of data output to a network is controlled by a buffer arrangement comprising a buffer memory 90 and a buffer controller 100, wherein the controller estimates the amount of data which will be read into the memory at the present input speed, adds that value to the data already present and generates a processing signal which will control the data so as to have an input speed to prevent overflow (or underflow) of data. The processing signal is used by the vector assembly 20 to remove data having a high frequency diagonal component (DM<3> where M = 2<m> for m = 1, 2, 3). As described, the buffer controller compares the estimated data, B, with two threshold levels to generate one of three processing signals which correspond with the removal of wavelets D2<3>, D4<3> and D8<3> or D2<3>, or with no removal. |
