A mineral mixture is pre-reduced at below 1350 deg C prior to high temperature melting in a carbon or graphite furnace crucible to separate molten metal and molten slag phases. Pre-reduction produces a significant reduction in consumption of the melting furnace electrodes and graphite lining. In a high temperature melting process, in which a melting furnace equipped with a carbon or graphite crucible is used to melt a mixture of mineral materials containing carbon-reducible oxides to separate a molten metal and a molten slag containing oxides not easily reduced by carbon, the melting operation is preceded by pre-reduction at below 1350 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for equipment comprising an incineration furnace, a pre-reduction furnace and a melting furnace for carrying out the above process.
