Polyvinyl halide polymers and co-polymers are plasticized with new triesters of monohydric alcohols with saturated aliphatic tricarboxylic acids containing an open chain of 4-8 carbon atoms, the 1st, 2nd and 4th being directly attached to the carboxylic groups, singly, mixed, or mixed with other plasticizers, and compounded by customary methods. In examples, plasticized compositions containing polyvinyl chloride and tris - (2 - ethylhexyl)-1 : 2 : 4-butane tricarboxylate (1 : 2 parts), trinonyl - 1 : 2 : 4 - butane - tricarboxylate (2 : 1 parts), and tricyclohexyl 1 : 2 : 4-butane-tricarboxylate (2 : 1), and a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, containing triheptyl 2 - methylbutane 1 : 2 : 4 - tricarboxylate, each with some conventional compounding agent are described. Numerous similar esters are specified, in which the above acids or halogen substitution products thereof are esterified with monohydric alcohols of 5 or more C atoms including monoetherified and monoesterified diols, and halogenated alcohols.ALSO:The invention comprises triesters of 1 : 2 : 4-tricarboxylic acids of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons of 4 and more carbon atoms with monohydric alcohols of 5 and more C atoms, obtainable by usual methods and valuable as plasticizers for vinyl halide polymers. Both the acids and alcohols used may be substituted by halogen. The acids are obtainable by oxidation of substituted 4-cyclohexenes, such as the 1-carboxy, 1-aldehydo- or 1-keto-4-cyclohexene, obtainable by condensing butadiene with a -b -unsaturated aldehydes or acids. In examples, esters of 1 : 2 : 4-butane-tricarboxylic acid and its 2-methyl-, and 3-chloro-derivatives with 2-ethylhexanol, hexanol, cyclohexanol, heptyl, nonyl, and decyl alcohols, and a mixture of C5-C8 alcohols are described. Other alcohols and acids from which such esters may be derived are referred to, including halogenated alcohols and monoetherified and mono-esterified diols and bromo-tricarboxylic acids. In further examples, plasticized compositions containing polyvinyl chloride, and polyvinyl chloride/acetate copolymers with some of the above esters, compare favourably in physical properties with compositions containing the conventional plasticizers. |
