The present invention relates to a use of a proteasome inhibitor to induce apoptosis in proliferating cells. Different functional targets of the proteasome are elucidated, identifying the mode of action of various proteins in cell cycling and apoptosis. The effects of the said proteasome inhibitor on mitochondrial function and nitric oxide production are disclosed along with an assay to identify proteasome inhibitors.
