PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device which is excellent in productivity and is capable of maintaining stable characteristics for a long period. SOLUTION: This antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device is constituted by disposing the alignment layers of a pair of electrodes provided with the alignment layers opposite to each other and holding antiferroelectric liquid crystals between the alignment layers. A first alignment layer of the alignment layers is formed by imidizing a polyimide precursor consisting of tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and diamine compd. and a second alignment layer has a dielectric constant of <=2.8. The antiferroelectric liquid crystals are oriented by the alignment layers described above, thereby, the antiferroelectric liquid crystals are well aligned without defect and, therefore, the stable alignment is obtd. and the stable element characteristics are obtd. |
