Apparatus for growing crystals in a medium lifted on films of gas has a sealed vessel and feeds or at least two diffusers for simultaneous delivery of the media for lifting on the films of gas. The apparatus has observation, control and/or manipulation systems for lifted media. The diffusers can be positioned within the vessel to keep the media permanently in a lifted state for observation, manipulation and/or control. The diffusers are displaced alternately and linearly displacement along a single axis or two orthogonal axes, or on a circular displacement path. The displacement is effected through a rotating drum which holds the diffusers, or a plate where they are held on a matrix. Or the diffusers can be in a row on a strip, which is moved as required. The lifting gas feed has a single gas feed chamber, for the diffuser array, and a gas feed channel. The drive is a shaft operated by a motor. The shaft is hollow and also acts as a gas channel with an adapter as a rotating or sliding joint to feed the gas into the shaft. The observation system consists of at least one lateral porthole. The manipulation is through the diagnostic system in situ and a remote manipulator. The media for lifting are fluid or gelled masses, solutions or droplets. The material for crystallizing are organic or mineral, organic and/or biological macro mols., or proteins. The apparatus has 2-12 diffusers.
