The method involves connecting the transmission paths (S1 to S13) through at least one exchange (VStl to VSt5) to a distribution network (50) with tree structure, and distributing the usage data from a data transmitter (12) over the distribution network to at least one terminal (EG2, EG4). The exchange (VStl) forwards the data received through an incoming transmission path (S1) over at least one outgoing transmission path (S2) into the partial network (54) accessible over this transmission path. A node unit (KE1) in the exchange detects the signalling condition of the incoming path in response to received messages (60), and produces corresponding messages (74). A path unit (SE2) is provided in the exchange, for each partial network, which detects the signalling condition of the outgoing path of the respective partial network in response to received messages (76; 60, 82, 84), and produces corresponding messages (86; 72, 78, 80). One terminal unit (GE2, GE4) is provided in the exchange for each terminal (EG2, EG4), which detects the condition of the corresponding terminal in response to respective messages (62, 64), and produces corresponding messages (82, 84) for the respective path unit.
