Specific separation of groups of elements from aqueous solutions using adsorption membranes comprises (a) filtering the solution through anion exchange membrane to reversibly bind a first group of metals and metalloids and recover the filtered solution as filtrate 1; (b) filtering filtrate 1 through cation exchange membrane to reversibly bind a second group of metal(loid)s; and (c) recovering the filtered solution containing a third group of elements as filtrate 2.
