An electric servo steering system has an electric motor (5) to add torque to the steering linkage via a control circuit. The torque on the steering wheel is monitored and the control initiates the servo motor drive when the steering wheel torque is less than or equal to a preset level. This ensures that the servo effect starts at a low level and increases progressively. The electric motor provides torque independent of the engine torque.
