The invention relates to a magnetic holding device which holds the blanks (4), said blanks being made of ferromagnetic sheet metal and are to be welded to one another, on a fixing plate (1) by the force of a permanent magnet (6). The permanent magnet (6) can be adjusted from the holding position thereof on the blank (4) to a withdrawn neutral position by means of an adjusting cam in the form of a cylinder piston unit (18). In the neutral position, the magnetic force of the magnet on the blank (4) is too small in order to be able to hold the blank (4) on the fixing plate (1).
