System components used to produce or process (meth)acrylic acid esters are cleaned by a) emptying the components; b) rinsing the components with an aqueous 5-50 wt. % alkali hydroxide solution; (c) removing the alkali hydroxide solution from the system components; d)optionally re-rinsing the system components with water and e) optionally drying the plant components.
