Forward path (102) is channelized by supplying a voltage to a voltage-controlled oscillator (22), and this voltage includes two components. One component is a channelizing voltage that will drive the voltage-controlled oscillator (22) to a frequency that approximates the desired frequency. The other is a frequency-correction voltage that the frequency-hopping oscillator (60) has learned for each channelized frequency as a phase detector (62) and an integrator (68) have phase locked the output frequency of a VCO (22) to each of the channelized frequencies a plurality of times previously. Thus, the present invention includes a learning process in which variations in proportionalities and linearities of the VCO (22) and such components as resistors, an A/D converter and a D/A converter (84) are corrected by the frequency-correction voltages that the frequency-hopping oscillator (60) learns, stores, and accesses. Further the learning process compensates for temperature drifting.
