Production of anhydrous composition containing polar or nonpolar compound

A novel process for producing an anhydrous composition containing a surface-active carbohydrate derivative (I) and a polar or nonpolar compound (II). This process comprises (a) dissolving (II) in an anhydrous solvent, (b) combining the solution with (I) or a solution of (I) in a polar or nonpolar solvent so that the resulting homogeneous mixture has a (I):(II) molar ratio of 1:0.001 - 1, (c) optionally adding an anhydrous hydrophilic polyol and/or polyether formulating aid (III) so that the (III):(I) molar ratio is 1:0.01-1, and (d) extracting the mixture with a 2-4C hydrocarbon and/or dimethyl ether extractant in a separation column at 20-150 deg C and 3-50 MPa to obtain a molten bottom stream comprising the anhydrous composition and a liquid overhead stream containing the solvent.
