The assembly system has a central drive (2) to operate the assembly tools at the workstations. A transfer mechanism (3) gives a cyclic movement and positioning of the work-piece carriers (4) with their work-pieces. The drive has a control shaft with cam discs to operate curved push/pull links to the assembly tools. The transfer structure has a number of linear advance units (9) extending from one workstation to the next, overlapping each other, and a moving slide (10). The work-piece carriers, coupled to the slide, are positioned in the working zone of the tools connected to the push/pull links when the slide is at the start or end position (I,II).
