The roller is for use with a flexible plate, and has elastic material at the middle bearing against the plate. Its axis of rotation is parallel to that of the cylinder, and it is adjustable at right-angles to this axis. Elastic material (Y,Y') on the roller periphery on either side of the plate (3) bears against the cylinder (5) in the working position. In the free position these areas (Y,Y') are clear of the middle one (X) for a distance (a) in the radial direction greater than the thickness (d) of the plate. The distances for which adjustment takes place when pulling the plate onto the cylinder, and also when pressing the plate against the latter, is greater than the difference between (a) and (d).
