A microwave generator has an optical cavity (2, 3) containing a nonlinear optical medium (1) which is supplied, by an optical source (4), with a wide frequency range pump beam for microwave generation by frequency differences, the optical cavity being tuned to the microwave wavelength and one of its mirrors being semi-reflective or quasi-reflective at the microwave wavelength. An Independent claim is also included for a compressed optical source which comprises the above generator. Preferred Features: The mirrors of the optical cavity comprise LaAlO3 substrates having a superconductor material layer on one of their faces.
