PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the air-fuel ratio of engine combustion mixture lean to a maximum by controlling pressure supercharged by a mechanical supercharger. SOLUTION: The reference amount of air and the amount of fuel are set corresponding to a target torque (S2-S6) and the opening of a throttle valve and the injection amount of fuel by a fuel injection valve are controlled in accordance therewith. On the other hand, a target surge torque is set corresponding to the lockup condition of a torque converter, a gear change ratio and acceleration (S7-S10) and the flow rate of a bypass in a supercharger is controlled by the opening of a bypass valve so that actual surge torque (S11) found as the variation of rotation can approach the target surge torque (S12-S15).
