Maleic acid derivatives of general formula (1) (wherein one of R<1> and R<2> is alkyl or halogen-substituted alkyl, and the other is a polyethylene glycol residue, a polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether residue or a halogen-substituted alkyl; and R<3> and R<4> are each alkyleneimino; with the proviso that R<1> and R<2> are not the same). These derivatives are capable of forming self-assembly monomolecular films and also reversibly changing the wettability of the surfaces of the monomolecular films without detaching themselves from the substrate surfaces.
