PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a safe and low-cost plant growth promoting agent by using a radiation decomposition product of sodium alginate which is a natural marine resource. SOLUTION: Sodium alginate is decomposed to obtain polysaccharides having low molecular weight and usable as a plant growth promoter by irradiating sodium alginate in the form of aqueous solution or powder withγ-ray or electron beam (the radiation source is<60> Co, electron accelerator, etc.), at a radiation dose of 10-500 kGy. The polysaccharide is dissolved in water and the dilute aqueous solution is used in the water culture of a plant or sprayed on the leaf of the plant.
