PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antidiabetic agent which shows the remarkable suppressive effect on the increase of blood sugar due to glucose tolerance and decreases the amount of absorbing sugar from digestive tracts by formulating crushed pieces of a specific plant or an extract from the plant as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This antidiabetic agent contains crushed pieces of at least one kind selected from the group consisting of Salacia prinoides (a plant of the family Celastraceae growing wild in Vietnam and the like) and Salacia oblonga (similarly it is a plant of the family Celastraceae and is called Chundan in Tamil) or an extract from these plants as an active ingredient. For example, a dry powder produced by crushing the terrestrial and the underground parts of the above plants in a size of 200-300 meshes or an extract extracted with alcohols is used. On the powder, it may be taken three times a day about 30 min before meals at a dose of 50-300 mg per an adult. |
