PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the general usability of an injector and low fuel consumption by composing a cam operated plunger assembly of internal and external plungers and a timing plunger interposed between them, and making the effective length of the plunger assembly variable. SOLUTION: An open nozzle fuel injector 2 is provided with an injector body 4 with a plunger assembly 8 fittingly mounted therein. The injector 4 is provided with a barrel 10, a nozzle 12 and a spring housing 14 as main components. The plunger assembly 8 is constituted by disposing a timing plunger 22 coaxially between internal and external plungers 18, 20. The effective length of the assembly 8 can be adjusted by changing the quantity of a timing fluid to a timing chamber 52 between the plungers 20, 22, and the supply of the timing fluid is cut off by the downward movement of the external plunger 20 by the rotation of a cam 38 through a link 40. |
