A switch (4) on the key (1) initiates repeated code transmission from a memory (10) via a processor (9) and infra-red link (5-11), to an on-board processor (12) for comparison with its memorised code (13). Turning the key to "Start" energises (15, 16) the on-board circuits. If the received code is validated, an authorising signal is passed to a holding circuit (18), which ensures its availability for a certain time. Any abnormal condition of the microprocessor (12), due to eg. low battery state, signal noise, etc., is detected by a time-delayed sequencing circuit (17). Further attempts to start the engine, e.g., on a motor-cycle by kick-starting, may then succeed without having to re-verify the keyholder's authorisation. |
