A thin porous coating at least partially consisting of calcium carbonate is formed at the cathode (7) and a gas flow is generated through the pores of the cathode (7) as the water is electrolyzed so that the crystals at least partially made up of calcium carbonate and formed on the coating during electrolysis are detached therefrom by the gas flow.
