The side wall (14) which defines the circumferential boundary of the cutting chamber (4) is not perfectly circular with respect to the axis (16) of blade (6) rotation. Instead, the chamber (4) is stretched or elongated with respect to the blade tips (9) over the rear half of the chamber (4) to be obround to the rear of the chamber (4). This enhances use of the mower as a mulcher. In addition, grass deflecting members (20) are desirably used in the rear half of the chamber (4) to further enhance the mulching action provided by the chamber (4).
