A removable protective layer or film containing a polyacrylate, polymerised acrylic acid derivative or acrylate copolymer is applied to the surface. - A method for cleaning and/or keeping clean contaminated surfaces in areas where painting or lacquering is carried out comprises applying a protective surface layer or film and then later washing away the this protective layer and the contaminants with it. The protective layer contains a polymer chosen from polyacrylates, polymerised acrylic acid derivatives and/or acrylate copolymers. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for the use of a combination of the above polymer and a solvent for preparing the protective surface layer.
