The implant is made from porous ceramic insert with fusion surfaces to make contact with vertebrae and reinforcing member of biocompatible material The implant (1), designed to be inserted between two adjoining vertebrae, has a porous ceramic body (2) with fusion surfaces making contact with the vertebrae, two lateral surfaces, and a pre-stressing reinforcing member (3) of a biocompatible material, applying a pressure against the lateral surfaces. The reinforcing member has a socket shaped to receive an instrument used in inserting the implant, and is in the form of a rigid rod with fixed and detachable end discs. The ceramic body is cylindrical in shape with flat sides, surface threads (21) with rounded edges for screwing into place, and a porosity which extends from one surface to the other. The ceramic can be of tricalcium phosphate or hydroxy apatite and resorbable or non-resorbable.
