摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the productivity and to maintain stable characteristics for a long time by forming an orienting film by imidizing a specified polyimide precursor by chemical cyclization method to give uniaxial orienting property to the film. SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal display element comprising a pair of electrodes having orienting films and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal held between the orienting films, the orienting film is formed by imidizing a polyimide precursor containing a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride or its deriv. and a diamine compd. by chemical cyclization method, and the orienting film has uniaxial orienting property. By orienting the antiferroelectric liquid crystal with the orienting film above described, the antiferroelectric liquid crystal can be well oriented with little defects, and therefore, stable characteristics of the element can be obtd. By using a coating method, the production is simple with excellent productivity. Moreover, the material of the orienting film can be selected from a wide variety of materials.
