Compositions for promoting germination and growth of plants in soils having reduced fertility contain a hydrophilic material and various active materials, which are retained where required by absorption into the hydrophilic material. Suitable hydrophilic materials may be natural animal, vegetable or mineral substances, such as those derived from maize, wood, paper, sugar cane, marine sponges, or rubber, or may be synthetic such as acrylic polymers and copolymers, glass balls, textiles, and synthetic sponges. The active materials may be any of the following: Simple and complex nutrients, soil improvement or regeneration agents, fungicides, pesticides, insecticides, root hormones, salinity correcting agents, herbicides, plant growth regulators, specific plant disease treatment agents, perfume or repellant agents active against insects and animals, controlled release fertilizers, anti-freezing agents, sap circulation activating agents, water or soil bacterial treatment agents, and fire retardants. The compositions may further contain colors, binders, trace elements, nitrifying bacteria, sulfur, and chalk.
