A connector is provided containing a fibre stub 8 for allowing passage of light between a semiconductor device and a waveguide. The connector is particularly appropriat e for passage of light between a semiconductor laser and an optical fibre of a fibre o ptic network. The fibre stub has at least one surface 33 in the cladding 32 adapted t o prevent light travelling in the cladding substantially parallel to the longitudi nal axis of the fibre stub. This surface may be reflecting, either through a reflecting coat ing or by being angled so as to be totally internally reflecting, or may be coated with an attenuating material. The surface 33 may be an angled surface at an end face of the fibre stub, and the fibre stub built up to a flat end by addition of light atten uating material over the angled surface 33 of the cladding: a method of carrying this o ut is described.
