Locking mechanism for sliding vehicle seat

The seat (22) has a hinge plate mounted to pivot on the base plate (30) which allows the seat back (28) to pivot between a forward position when the seat is not occupied and an upright position when the seat is in use. The seat cushion (32) is mounted so as to slide to a position forward of its normal position in use so as to allow access to the area behind the seat of the vehicle. A drive pin is located on the hinge plate and a fastener is provided that can be moved between the fastened and unfastened positions through the action of the drive pin. A lock is in contact through friction with the fastener and an operating mechanism is provided to actuate the lock .
