Method for evaluating rapidly the susceptibility of microorganisms to antimicrobial substances which consists in determining the quantity of mycolic acids of sample isolation cultures from infected patients or directly from a clinical sample by using the total area of chromatographic peaks which correspond to mycolic acids or by using another analytic method to estimate the quantity of mycolic acids, wherein the growth of microorganisms is evaluated by determining the mycolic acid index (MAI) defined as the ratio between the mycolic acid increment produced in the incubation of a problem strain during a set time in the presence of a drug and the increase of mycolic acids produced in an incubation of the same problem strain and time in the absence of the drug, thereby relating a wide range of species of microbacteria and other microorganisms which contain mycolic acids in their cellular wall wherein their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents or drugs can be determined in a very short time starting from cultures obtained from biological samples.
|
