An opto-electric sensing element alters the luminance of the instrumentation light with the output signal, according to the ambient brightness. An image sensor (2) oriented in the direction of travel is provided as the optoelectric sensing element in order to obtain an automatic measurement of the distribution of ambient brightness in the direction of travel, taking into account the brightness in certain areas of the vehicle environment. The image sensor (2) measures the absolute brightness in selected locations. The electric output signal of the image sensor is evaluated by an evaluation unit (3) with predetermined or predeterminable algorithms in order to determine the ambient brightness, and can then be conveyed to a control unit (4) in order to influence the brightness of the instrumentation light (5).
