A novel process the surface modification of a clay mineral mixture, reagents or additives are added immediately before, during and/or immediately after the clay mineral mixture. This addition, wetting or chemical reaction uses the heat energy generated by milling. Surface modification of a clay mineral mixture is done to make it hydrophobic, to change the charge, or for functionalization, e.g. by adding functional groups. This modification involves adding reagents or additives and milling the mixture. The reagents or additives are added immediately before, during and/or immediately after the clay mineral mixture is milled, and so this addition, wetting or chemical reaction uses the heat energy generated by milling.
