A zoom lens system for a compact camera has a front set of lenses (10) with a positive power spaced from a rear set (20) with negative power. The ratio of the combined longest focal length to that of the rear set is in the range of -7.0 to -5.1. The lens groups are selected for minimum spherical aberration, with one lens of the second set having an aspheric surface. Uses only two lens sets compared to the conventional three sets.
