A weathered hermatypic coral is immersed in an aqueous alkali solution under reduced pressure to conduct washing with an alkali until the aqueous alkali solution reaches the fine structure in the interior of the porous structure of the coral, and then washing with water is conducted until the washings discharged from the interior of the porous structure becomes neutral. The washing results in the removal of various seeweeds held by the weathered coral, various microorganisms living in the sea, including vibrious, and other organic materials, so that a safe weathered hermatypic coral material can be prepared. The obtained material is suitable as a food material, a filter medium for water cleaners, and the like.
