Adaptive video decoder for video transmission system

The decoder has an adaptive function for preventing block effects, with a buffer memory (71) for the incoming compressed video signal, coupled to a variable length decoder (72), providing a movement vector and a quantized signal for the spacial wave spectrum, which is dequantized and fed to a block effect detector (77), followed by an object contour line detector (78). A discrete cosine transformation retransformation device (74) provides an image signal, combined with a movement compensation signal, to provide the output signal. An Independent claim is included for a video decoding method with adaptive suppression of block effects.
