The brush-holder has a housing (2) in which the carbon brush (5) is supported for movement against a spring bias, pressing the brush into contact with a slip-ring (6), with a wear monitor provided by a source (48) attached to the brush for activating a stationary sensor (26,27). Each sensor is provided by a fluidic sensor coupled to a fluid line, e.g. a pressurised air line, with operation by the source when the carbon brush reaches is minimum length.
