The method involves injecting fuel directly into a combustion chamber (4) bounded by a piston (2) in the engine (1) either during a compression phase in a first mode or in an induction phase in a second mode and igniting the injected fuel. Injection of the fuel is ended before the fuel is ignited An Independent claim is also included for an engine which utilizes the engine starting method.
