Collision sensor for vehicles

The sensor consists of a plastic panel (2) located at likely points of impact. On impact the resultant deformation of the plastic generates structure-borne sound characteristic of the plastic material, which is detected by a sound sensor. The location of the impact can be derived based on the transit time of the signals generated. Another method of detection is an optical signal and sensor.
