Stabilization of thioacetic acid by addition of a chloro acetic acid. Thioacetic acid is stabilized against decomposition to form acetic acid, hydrogen sulfide, and acetyl sulfides, by addition of a chloroacetic acid, preferably dichloroacetic acid. Usually 50 - 5000 ppm of the choroacetic acid is added, especially 100 - 2000 ppm, the thioacetic acid being freshly distilled with a water content below 0.5% and the product being stored in the absence of air. Independent claims cover compositions containing thioacetic acid and 50 - 5000 ppm of a chloroacetic acid, preferably dichloroacetic acid. |
