A method is described of controlling the heating effect of a flame on an article, such as a glass article, wherein the flame is generated as a substantially constant flame and the impingement of the heat of the flame on the article is caused to vary in accordance with an automatically controlled program. This may be achieved by moving the nozzle towards, and away from, the article, by moving the nozzle angularly, or using a flame deflector to intermittently deflect the flame away from the article. Where a deflector is used, this may be mechanical, pneumatic or electrical in nature. |
