A modified animal protein fibre especially wool from which surface scales have been removed, without damaging the cortex, to leave a surface comprising residual scales and the imprints of removed scales is new. Also claimed is a process for removing scales from an animal protein fibre, in which the keratin cement layer that binds the scales (cuticle) to the cortex is weakened or destroyed. Also claimed are textile articles made from such a fibre.
