The dual role of motor and generator enables operation of the bed in the absence of normal electrical supply. The hospital bed comprises a base frame and two end supports, with the bed itself carried between the two end supports. One end of the bed is provided with an electric motor (M1) which can be used to raise or lower that end of the bed (3). There is also an auxiliary electric motor (M2) mounted at the opposite end of the bed. In the absence of the normal electrical supply, the auxiliary motor is capable of operating as a generator to provide power to operate the first motor. The auxiliary motor has provision to attach a handle, so that it can be turned by hand if necessary to produce the power required for operation of the first electric motor. It is possible that the roles of the two motors can be reversed.
