Genetic methods, protocols and compositions are disclosed for decreasing the occurrence of boar taint caused by synthesis of Δ16-steroids in the testes of swine. Certain amino acid modifications of the enzyme P450c17 are disclosed which prevent the production of Δ16-steroids while still maintaining improved weight gain, feed efficiency and carcass traits associated with male steroid hormone production. Mutations in the P450c17 gene which inhibit the enzyme's ability to produce Δ16-steroids are disclosed, as well as gene sequences for producing the mutant enzymes. Methods of using this genetic information including screening of polymorphisms for naturally occurring polymorphic loci which result in the modification of the amino acid sites at interest and genetic engineering of swine to produce the same, are also disclosed.
|
