PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal type continuously variable transmission which has a variator smallin maximum speed reducing ratio, does not require a large speed increasing ratio, suffers small restrictions in its designs, and can be designed for a lightweight and compact device. SOLUTION: This toroidal type continuously variable transmission is composed of an input shaft 5 rotated by a drive source, an output shaft 27 to take out the power due to the rotation of the input shaft, and a variator 2 and planetary gearing mechanism 3 installed between the input and output shafts, wherein the input shaft 5 is directly coupled with the planetary gearing mechanism while the power is circulated to the variator in the low speed mode and no power is circulated in the high speed mode. When the gear ratio width of the variator 2 is represented byλ, the value of the gear ratio of the variator 2 at the time of mode change is made below√λ.
