A five speed automatic transmission has a first planetary train (1) comprising two planetary units (PG1, PG2) coupled together by their sun wheels and by their ring gears, and with a second planetary train (3) comprising two planetary units (PG3, PG4). The whole system is fitted with links to provide five forward gear ratios and one reverse gear ratio using a reduced number of control brakes in a compact layout. The layout dispenses with a high speed gear element and thereby reduces wear.
