The invention relates to a feed mechanism for a forming device, especially a cold forming device such as a rotary swaging device in which a work piece (2) to be processed is movable by means of a reducing device (20). The reducing device (20) contains tool segments (22a-22d) which process the work piece (2). Said tool segments are periodically movable with a working frequency from a closed position to an open position. In the closed position, the tool segments (22a-22d) are in working contact with the work piece (2) which is to be processed. According to the invention, a sensor unit (30) is provided which can determine the position of the tool segments (22a-22d) of the reducing device (20). The sensor unit (30) generates a sensor signal (S) which characterizes the position of the tool segments (22a-22d) and can be fed to an evaluating unit (40). The evaluating unit (40) generates a control signal (V) which controls the feed mechanism (10), said control signal being independent of the sensor signal (S) fed to said evaluating unit.
