<p>A surface light emitting laser capable of obtaining apparently one laser beam by emitting laser beams having a synchronized phase from a plurality of light outgoing portions while a transverse mode is controlled, and a method of production thereof. The surface light emitting laser comprises a columnar portion (20) constituting a part of a reflecting mirror on the light outgoing side, a buried layer (22) surrounding the columnar portion (20), an upper electrode (23) formed on the columnar portion (20) and the buried layer (22) and an insulating layer (18) formed beneath the columnar portion (20) and the buried layer (22), wherein a plurality of opening portions (23a) are formed on the columnar portion (20) in the upper electrode (23), opening portions (18a) are formed in the insulating layer (18) at positions corresponding to the opening portions (23a), and, because the absolute refractive index of the buried layer (22) is slightly smaller than that of the columnar portion (20), the transverse mode can be controlled.</p> |
