An additive for inhibiting gas hydrate formation contains: (a) 5-90 wt.% 2-isobutylalcohol; (b) 5-60 wt.% copolymer having structural units selected from maleic acid (anhydride) or their derivatives; and (c) at least 10 wt.% water or mono- or divalent alcohol. An Independent claim is also included for a process for inhibiting the formation of gas hydrates. Used in pipelines, valves and production equipment for crude oil and natural gas.
