The invention concerns a telescopic device for a vacuum cleaner, comprising an inner tube (1) and an outer tube (2), the inner tube (1) capable of sliding inside the outer tube (2) between a retracted position and a projecting position, a ring-shaped joint, provided for ensuring tightness between the inner tube (1) and the outer tube (2), and a lock (5) mounted on the outer tube, arranged to lock the two tubes (1, 2) in at least one position. The invention is characterised in that the joint co-operates with a ring to seal the device when the outer tube (2) is locked in projecting position on the inner tube (1) by the lock (5), and the joint (3) allows no contact with one of the tube (1, 2) walls thereby providing a ring-shaped space (7) with said wall, when the inner tube takes up at least an intermediate position, and preferably most of the intermediate positions, between the retracted position and the projecting position.
